John Washington III Calls for an Independent Citizens' Justice Review: 'Who Do the People Turn to for Justice?'
John Washington III is asking what happens when the officials accused of breaking the law are the ones who enforce it — and proposing an independent authority, outside the institutions being challenged, to review credible evidence of official wrongdoing.

John Washington III has called for a national conversation about establishing an independent citizens' justice review process, arguing that justice should not depend on the approval of the same government institutions a citizen is challenging. "What happens when the very people responsible for enforcing the law are the ones being accused of breaking it?" he wrote. "When a citizen has evidence of wrongdoing by a government official, but the district attorney refuses to pursue the case, where does that citizen turn?"
John Washington III pressed the accountability question further. "Who holds the district attorney accountable? Who investigates the investigators? And who protects the people when the system refuses to act?" he wrote. He argued that the American people should have the legal right to present credible evidence of criminal wrongdoing to an independent authority, especially when conflicts of interest may exist.
Under the process John Washington III described, that authority would be empowered to review complaints, investigate where warranted and pursue appropriate legal action while protecting everyone's constitutional rights. "Justice should never depend on someone's political connections, government position, wealth, or influence," he wrote.
"Our government derives its authority from the people. The justice system exists to serve the people, not protect government officials from accountability," John Washington III wrote. "Because if the people cannot hold their government accountable, who is the government truly serving?" He closed with a call to "question the system, demand accountability, protect the rights of the people." John Washington III is a candidate for president in 2028.
