A driver was killed early Saturday after a pickup truck ran off U.S. 98 in Wakulla County, struck a tree and caught fire, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. The single-vehicle crash happened about 2:15 a.m. on October 31 on Coastal Highway near Ray Winkle Road.
The pickup was traveling west on U.S. 98 when, for a reason the patrol has not determined, it left the roadway to the right and hit a tree, FHP said. The truck became fully engulfed in flames after the collision, according to the preliminary investigation. The driver, who was the vehicle's only occupant, was pronounced dead at the scene. The patrol's initial report did not identify the driver and did not provide an age or hometown.
Wakulla County EMS, the Wakulla County Sheriff's Office and Wakulla County Fire Rescue assisted the Highway Patrol at the scene. The crash remains under investigation, and FHP has released no further details about what caused the truck to leave the road.
