Leon County Turnout Nears 36 Percent as Early Voting Heads Into Its Final Weekend (Tallahassee Watch News)

Leon County voters are turning out at a pace the county's elections chief described as trending on the high side for a midterm. As of 9 a.m. Saturday, October 31, 66,321 out of Leon County's 184,523 registered voters had cast ballots by mail or in early voting, pushing turnout to nearly 36 percent, according to figures reported by the Tallahassee Democrat. Early voting ends Sunday, November 1, ahead of the Tuesday, November 3 general election.

Supervisor of Elections Mark Earley said turnout was surpassing the 2022 midterms by a significant amount and predicted it would land somewhere around 65 percent, roughly on par with 2018. Earley attributed the high local interest in part to the contested city races on this year's ballot.

The early electorate so far has leaned Democratic in a county where Democrats make up nearly 47.8 percent of registered voters. As of Friday afternoon, Democrats accounted for nearly 56.8 percent of ballots cast, Republicans for nearly 27 percent, and voters with no party affiliation or in minor parties for about 16 percent, the Democrat reported. Roughly 40 percent of all registered Democrats in the county had voted by October 30, compared with about 30 percent of Republicans.
